LIFE AS A PORTRAIT

First post from my new iPhone, will definitely be using this more often!

Pretty much how I feel about illustration HW right now.

I highly suggest everyone involved in graphic design in any facets makes sure they take a peak at this guys website.  He dedicates the entire site for up and coming designers like myself to keep an eye on all of his design tutorials in programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc.

I have done a couple myself, and they are excellent.  Very descriptive and well written.  There are also some posted on there in the archives for a little more advanced users who are familiar with the programs as well.

Either way, pro or newbie, definitely a must see!

Back to school, back to school…..

Alright so here it is, first blog post of second semester.  Overall first semester was excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed the program.  I know now 100% this is what I want to do in life, Graphic Design/Photography.  I am very excited to see what second semester has in store, but most of all getting on to second year where the real fun begins!

With a generation completely overcome by social networking this video has presence like no other.  The accuracy of some of the statistics is questionable at best but interesting to think about none the less. I think the most interesting fact put forward in the video was the one about how many years it took different form of media to reach 50 million users.  The radio took almost 40 years to hit 50 million users where Facebook had 200 million hits within its first year goig public outside of school systems.

Now a days news travels faster through social media than it does through any of the major news networks.  With this revelations comes many inaccuracies about current events, but none the less the information gets out there.  For example when we had the small earthquake this year news traveled across the entire country on Facebook in a matter of an hour, where as CBC didn’t broadcast it until almost 2 hours later.

The world we live in is fast paced and constantly changing, too keep up with everything is almost impossible by yourself, but with social networking things become a whole lot more manageable.

So this is an absolutely juicy piece of graphic design using “tilt-shift” lenses.  To make these types of video you need a high vantage point and a specific type of lenses that you can heavily manipulate the depth-of-field to give you the sense of a “toy-car” feel to all the drift cars.

All tied in with an excellent piece of music by Gary Jules called “Mad World” made for quite the intriguing video.

Why a MacBook Pro? Well I’ll tell you why….

(The reason for this rant was because on one of my car forums someone was posting about how all MacBook users are fanboys and hipsters…I quickly discredited that with the following rant)

Ok so I’ll begin my rant by saying I was NEVER a Mac fan. I have been using PC Windows based systems that I’ve been building myself since I was 16. Anytime I would hear about people preaching macs I’d be quick too ignore the banter.

So this year I started a 3 year graphic design program and knew I would need a laptop. Being a PC guy forever I went too future shop and bought the nicest laptop I could buy, i7, 4G DDR3, 1 TB storage, full touch screen monitor, all that business I was very impressed. After about a week of the program I had been told enough times that in 2nd year I would need a MacBook Pro that I started questioning my purchase of the PC.

So I went too Future Shop and started checking out prices on Macs and I started shitting baby’s at the prices vs the specs. To buy the equivalent i7 MacBook pro in 15.6” it was going too cost 2399.99. Considering I purchased the PC laptop for 1400+tax I started freaking out and asking questions. The question I asked the Mac specialist at the store was “Why the hell am I paying so much more for a MacBook when this spec sheet tells me otherwise in terms of value. How will this i5 MacBook pro keep up with the PC laptop I just bought and am looking too return?” They’re answer was very simple. The Mac OSX is the most reliable and efficient OS out there. When Windows is launched on a PC there needs too be tons of applications running in the background too keep everything running smooth which ALL eats up memory. If you have ever launched a MacBook pro youll know, it needs NOTHING to be launched, making it by far the cleanest fastest startup I’ve ever seen and I have built some serious desktop PCs.

I started playing around with my 15.6” i5 MacBook Pro and quickly realized why people love Macs beyond even the fanboy hippster aspect. I mean no one can deny the unibody design of the new Pro absolutely demolish the design of any PC laptop I’ve seen, but even beyond that my i5 MacBook Pro out performed my i7 Windows 7 based PC laptop.

Anyways I could continue going on and on and on about this whole story but in the end what it came down too was me being WAYYYY happier with my i5 MacBook Pro than my i7 Windows based PC laptop, and would never reconsider for a second, even WITH the nearly 900$ price difference. SO all you people who are HARDCORE pc users (Which I still would consider myself because my desktop system would embarrass most peoples set-ups) when it comes too laptops its just hard too compete with a MacBook even though your PC laptop may have mind blowing specs in comparison don’t think for a second that the MacBook doesn’t outperform, because it does.

All in all what it comes down too is for hardcore gaming I will always play on my PC Desktop, for functionality and usability incorporated with convenience and efficiency, I <3 my MacBook Pro! (With this all being said I can still play all my games from my PC on my MacBook such as Starcraft 2, Left4Dead2, etc. etc.)

So this car already began as an amazing piece of art, completely covered in head too toe in sharpie marker art.  Lexus then stepped it up too the next level and got artists too do a full two sided graffiti job on the car.  They put together this amazing video to depict the events that went down the day they got this done.  As far as I can tell they did the entire paint job inside a Lexus dealership in front of customers.  Amazing work, and a very creative looking final product!

Hillman Curtis Website

Hillman Curtis, what an incredibly talented videographer.  I can’t say enough about the way this person shoots his/her videos.  The artist brings such an interesting aspect too all of the artists lives that he films.  I am pretty sure I have watched every single video on this site, and suggest doing the same too anyone interested or involved in graphic design.

Alright so let’s talk about the GAP for a second here.  What were they thinking with they’re new logo???  With a company that has been such a stylistic symbol for many many decades in modern day popular clothing culture, they really “dropped the ball” on this one.  In my opinion the new logo is boring, unoriginal, and all around ugly.  Not too say that simplicity doesn’t work in a logo because as you can see their old logo was nothing mind blowing, but it was clean, concise, and it worked. I feel as the the arbitrary blue box to the top right of the new logo is completely out of place, and creates an imbalance to the logo.

This new logo has created quite the buzz in the design world and I surely see why.  I’m sure there are loads of designers out their thinking too themselves “I could have created a much more appealing image”.  GAP is lucky they have such a strong customer base built, because without this I could not imagine this logo pulling in new customers just at the site of it.
